Simple Minds @ Wembley Arena Photos

These are the best photos I could take on the Fuji F610 whilst I had a 6+ foot guy swaying in front of me, hope they give an idea of how enthusiastic Jim and the lads were. Plenty of laughs all round on stage and a great reaction from the audience. A few videos will be winging their way online once I’ve mixed in the audio from the soundboard :D Including an unbelievable reworking of a track from the “Cry” album. Oh and the red lighting for a rendition of Neon Lights by Kraftwerk.

Oh yes and at the end of the gig before the lights came on, the house music started with “Brimful of Asha“. This lead to the band turning around and coming back on stage to have a little bit of a boogie to it. Now that was hilarious beyond belief, hope someone had video footage of that event :P

Just wish I could get a photo pass or something to use my SLR.

Rockets

I’m sorry to say this but quite frankly Simple Mind’s first choice as single doesn’t hit the sweet spot with me. The riff I can find something to like, but they’ve managed to kill the song with the music video. The number one rule is to never judge a song on the merits of the music video, but how can that count if you’re already in trouble with the audio side of things. This is a bad comparison but I wasn’t “that” fully into the groove of Get On Your Boots by U2, until I saw the music video. It turned my whole opinion of the song into it’s head making it an instant hit with me.

However with Rockets it has sort of cemented my awkward feelings towards the song. I’m not using it as a marker for the rest of the album “Graffiti Soul”, as I’m sure there will be several gems to be found. Am I the only way to feel like this as a fan? One thing I’m sure of is that my opinion may be changed on “Rockets” as soon as I hear it live. Now where are the London dates lads?

In case you don’t believe me on why I’m unimpressed, then please check out the “Home”, the lead single for Black & White 050505 which can be seen as a masterpiece in comparison.

UPDATE 14/04/09: I’ve had a change of heart and realised that I’m the sort of man that may favour shadows the dark mystery that lingers around. I know “Home” never really showed much of the faces of the band but it gave them a sort of reinvention for me, even though they only got me on board at Black & White 050505 after not even knowing about them. Rockets has grown on me, maybe not on the same wavelength as the epic start of B&W but I’ve found that groove.

With regards to the video it’s nice to see the band in full epic white light, but maybe I was looking for something with invention. Although I love the flying camera shots into Jim, now that made me giggle :D
